There’s so much to love about the Fall season: cool wardrobes, beloved flavors (pumpkin spice everything) and gorgeous foliage. Our very own Ken Malagiere offers a step-by-step guide to creating a beautiful asymmetrical wreath that will add serious Autumn flair to your front door!
What you will need:
• Grapevine wreath base
• Faux picks with artificial autumn leaves (soft tones, burgundy/plum hues as well as more traditional hues)
• Artificial mini pumpkins
• Artificial berries
• Burlap ribbon
• Autumn plaid ribbon (optional)
• Floral wire
You can purchase these items at your local arts and crafts store or right here at Mueller’s Historic Florist.
Take your wreath to the next level with fresh product:
• Natural wheat
• Hanging amaranthus
• Prince’s feather
• Natural eucalyptus
Step 1: Begin with your basic grapevine. Fluff out your picks with softer tones and tuck them in through the grapevine. You may also start tucking in your artificial berries and pumpkins. Bend back the stem on the opposite side of where your foliage is, so that it catches on the grapevine itself. Since this wreath is asymmetrical, one side will be free of actual décor, so you can appreciate the vine itself.
Step 2: Introduce your burgundy/plum picks towards the bottom of the wreath. Marry the two using a balanced autumn leaf.
Step 3: Bring in the element of your more traditional autumn leaves through the bottom and on top. These may be yellow or orange.
Note: It is not necessary to use glue, but if you live in an area where prone to high winds, you can use it.
Step 4: Take your burlap ribbon and make a bow. Start off with the larger loops first and place it between your thumb and forefinger in your less dominant hand. Then, take your dominant hand, fold up and pinch. Each time you bring your ribbon up, twist so that the front of the ribbon is exposed. Repeat this until your bow is complete (about six or seven loops). If you chose to include autumn plaid ribbon, work in a few loops into your burlap ribbon (about three loops). Secure your ribbon with floral wire.
Step 5: Place your bow right in the center of the picks and foliage on your wreath.

Step 6: Take your natural wheat and work it into the grapevine, very similarly to how you worked in your picks earlier (about three pieces on top and two pieces on the bottom).
Step 7: Grab your hanging amaranthus, clip the ends and feed it in between your picks.
Note: If you choose to use this fresh element, add it to your wreath the day of your special occasion.
Step 8: Tuck in your prince’s feather. Take your eucalyptus and run your hand down the stem with your thumb and forefinger. This gives you a nice stem to work with. Then, weave it through the grapevine.
