The daffodil, Narcissus with its striking yellow hues, is a beautiful reminder of the season. Following a dreary winter, daffodils are one of the earliest spring blooming flowers that add a pop of brightness to early Spring days. It is also the birth flower for the month of March.
Did you know, there is a deeper meaning behind the daffodil stemming back to Greek mythology?
Narcissus was an extremely handsome young man who was irresistible to those around him, but that came with a curse. Narcissus was not able to look at his own reflection as it would cause his good looks to disappear.
As legend has it, young Narcissus was walking in the woods when he was approached by a nymph, Echo. She was attracted to his beauty and tried pursuing him, but the love was unrequited. Heartbroken, she spent the rest of time roaming the woods wailing, until nothing was left but the sound of her voice and the prophecy of her name was fulfilled (an echo).
When the gods and goddesses heard this, they were angry at Narcissus. They decided to punish him by leading him to a sparkling lake. He saw his reflection in the water and was so taken back from his stunning physical appearance, that he was unable to look away. He began to disappear as he gazed into the lake until all that was left was a single daffodil.
This time of year, we often think of this legend that gave the beautiful bloom its name.
